Botany Lungwort
Lungwort (Pulmonaria vulgaris) is an early spring bloomer that belongs to the rough-leaved family (BoraginaceaeThe plant is native to Europe, but has since spread. Lungwort prefers shade and is often found in marshy woodlands, damp roadsides, and grasslands.
The herb is easily recognized by its oval and pointed leaves, softly hairy and with silvery spots—a pattern reminiscent of lung tissue, giving it the name "lungwort." Lungwort's flowers are unusual: they open pink and later fade to a purplish-blue, often visible in a single cluster. This color transition makes the plant a favorite with bees and early butterflies.
Origin and traditional application
The name Pulmonaria is derived from the Latin pulmo, meaning “long” – a reference to the ancient signature doctrine, in which the spots on the leaves symbolized the lungs. In medieval herbal medicine, lungwort was therefore used to support the respiratory tract.
In European folk medicine, lungwort was also considered a soothing herb for throat ailments and respiratory complaints. It was often used in syrups, teas, and infusions. Today, lungwort is still valued by herbalists and natural health enthusiasts for its mild, soothing effect on the respiratory tract and throat.
